- MOTOVUN -
Perched high on a hill, Motovun is one of Istria’s most charming and historic gems. This medieval town not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, but also a window into centuries of history and culture. The town dates back to ancient times, originally settled by the Illyrians and later developed by the Romans, but it really flourished in the Middle Ages under Venetian rule. The well-preserved city walls and the breathtaking view of the Mirna river valley make Motovun a must-see for history lovers. Wandering through its narrow streets feels like walking through a living museum.
Motovun is also known as the birthplace of two famous personalities. Andrea Antico, a Renaissance composer and music printer, was born here in the late 15th century. He was a pioneer in the early days of music publishing, playing a significant role in preserving and distributing Renaissance music. On a completely different note, Motovun is linked to the world of racing; legendary Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti was born here before his family emigrated to the USA, where he become one of the most successful racing drivers in history.
But, Motovun continues to shine not only for its rich history but also its cultural events. This region is a paradise for food lovers, especially those with a taste for truffles. The Mirna river valley is known for its abundance of these rare truffles and is therefore a must for culinary adventurers. Every fall, the town celebrates the truffle season with festivals where visitors can sample fresh truffle dishes along with the region's highly prized Istrian wines Malvasia and Teran.
In modern times, Motovun became known for the Motovun Film Festival, an annual event where independent films were shown in a truly unique setting. The combination of rich history, amazing food, and cultural events make Motovun an unforgettable destination. There’s even talk of UNESCO World Heritage status, which would be a fitting recognition for this incredible town.
And further on, two new captivating characters from the legends of Motovun appear: the gentle giant Veli Jože and the misunderstood witch Diletta. Veli Jože is one of Croatia’s most beloved mythical figures, first brought to life in Vladimir Nazor’s 1908 novel. Jože is a kind-hearted giant who symbolizes the strength and spirit of the common people. On the other hand, the legend of Witch Diletta adds an air of mystery and magic to Motovun’s folklore. Diletta, often portrayed as a healer, was feared by locals, who believed she possessed supernatural powers. These characters have shaped the cultural heritage of the region and are celebrated through stories, festivals, and local traditions.
