TRAVEL GUIDE BY MARU
- ROVINJ -

Rovinj on the Croatian peninsula of Istria is a charming town with a rich history and a vibrant culture. Its origins date back to prehistoric times, but over the centuries, Rovinj has been ruled by various powers, including the Republic of Venice for over 500 years, which left a significant architectural and cultural mark on the town. The Venetians built many of the most famous buildings and fortified the town to protect it from attack. In more recent history, after the fall of Venice, Rovinj came under the rule of various empires, including Napoleon’s French Empire, the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy, and Italy, before eventually becoming part of Yugoslavia and then modern Croatia.

The rich history of Rovinj is linked to its unique geographical development. Once an island, the town was separated from the mainland by a narrow canal until 1763, when it was filled in to promote growth and improve connectivity. History enthusiasts can visit the church of St. Euphemia, where the relics of the town’s patron saint are kept. Legend has it that the saint’s relics mysteriously arrived in Rovinj in the 9th century, and they remain an important part of the town’s heritage.

Rovinj is also home to the Batana Ecomuseum, which celebrates the traditional fishing boat, the batana, as an integral part of the town’s maritime culture. The museum is dedicated to preserving this tradition and offers boat trips on authentic batanas, where visitors can experience an important aspect of Rovinj’s maritime heritage. In addition, the town has become a centre for artists, especially during the summer months when local painters exhibit their works in the charming streets of the old town. One notable spot is Grisia Street, where an annual art festival attracts artists from all over Croatia and beyond, transforming the street into an open-air gallery.

In addition to all that Rovinj has to offer, it also has beautiful beaches such as the Golden Cape, which invite you to swim and relax in the sun. Another highlight is the cuisine, with fresh seafood, Istrian truffles and local wines rounding off the perfect experience. Today, Rovinj is a popular tourist destination known for its picturesque old town, narrow stone streets, lively cultural life and beautiful coastline. The Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and mild winters makes the town a popular destination all year round.
