Pula’s history stretches back to the Neolithic period, but it became especially significant when the Romans established a colony here in 46 BC. The city's most iconic landmark, the Pula Arena, was built during the 1st century under Emperor Augustus and is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. The arena once hosted gladiator fights and could accommodate over 20,000 spectators. Today, it still functions as a venue for concerts and the Pula Film Festival. Another interesting Roman remnant is the Arch of the Sergii, built to honor the noble Sergii family who contributed to the Roman war effort. Nearby, you’ll also find the Temple of Augustus, dedicated to the first Roman emperor.

 

Pula is not only known for its surface attractions but also for its underground tunnels and numerous fortresses, which add another layer to its fascinating history. These tunnels, known as Zerostrasse, were built during World War I by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which ruled the city at the time. The tunnels were constructed to provide shelter and storage for civilians and military personnel in case of air raids. Today, parts of these tunnels are open to the public and used for exhibitions, including galleries showcasing Pula’s wartime history. 

 

Beside to the tunnels, Pula is surrounded by a series of fortresses that reflect its military significance throughout history. These Austro-Hungarian fortifications were part of a defensive network designed to protect the naval port and the surrounding areas. A notable site from this later period is the Verudela Fortress, which now houses the Pula Aquarium, Croatia’s largest aquarium. Fort Punta Christo, has been transformed into a popular cultural venue, hosting music festivals, events, and art exhibitions. Its massive stone walls, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, merging Pula’s military past with its modern artistic scene. 

 

Pula is also home to some of the greatest beaches on the Istrian peninsula, offering a mix of pebble, rocky and sandy shores. Many of the beaches are located on the Verudela Peninsula, just a few kilometers from the city center, making them easily accessible to visitors. One of the most popular beaches is Ambrela Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters and gentle slopes, making it ideal for families. It has a Blue Flag designation, meaning it meets high environmental standards for cleanliness and safety. While Hawaiian Beach, located nearby, is famous for its cliffs and strong waves, offering more excitement for adventurous swimmers.
