Portorož, located on the Slovenian coast along the Adriatic Sea, is one of Slovenia’s most famous seaside resorts. Known for its history as a wellness destination, beautiful beaches and vibrant cultural life, Portorož is the perfect spot on Slovenian coast.

The city is best known for its long, sandy beach, which is one of the few natural sandy beaches on Slovenia's short coastline. Portorož’s history as a wellness and tourism destination dates back to the 19th century when it became famous for its therapeutic salt pans. The area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and aristocrats from Vienna and Trieste would come to Portorož to relax and benefit from the healing properties of its seawater, salt and mud baths. In the early 20th century, Portorož continued to grow in popularity. The construction of the Palace Hotel in 1910, one of the most luxurious hotels on the Adriatic at the time, symbolized the town’s golden era. 

 

In addition, the nearby Sečovlje Salt Pans is one of Portorož’s most unique attractions. The salt pans have been in use since the Middle Ages, and the traditional method of salt production is still practiced today. The Sečovlje Salina Nature Park offers visitors a chance to explore the salt fields, learn about the history of salt production, and see a variety of bird species that inhabit the area. The salt pans are also home to the Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa, where guests can experience therapeutic treatments based on the local salt and mud. 

 

Portorož is not only known for its wellness tourism but also for its casino culture. The Grand Casino Portorož, founded in 1913, is one of the oldest casinos in Europe and continues to attract visitors looking to try their luck. Every year, Portorož hosts the Portorož Boat Show, one of the largest nautical events in the region, where luxury yachts and boats are showcased.
