LIM FJORD
Discover the Wonders of Lim Fjord
This unique fjord bay is located between the towns of Rovinj and Vrsar and stretches over 10 kilometers inland from the Adriatic Sea. Known for its dramatic scenery, pristine waters and rich marine life, Lim Fjord offers visitors a peaceful retreat and a variety of outdoor activities in a breathtaking setting. Despite its name, Lim Fjord is not a true fjord in the geological sense, as it was not formed by glacial activity. Instead, it is a ria, a type of flooded river valley created by the erosion of the land and subsequent flooding of the area.
One of the best ways to experience the Lim Fjord is on a boat tour from nearby Rovinj or Vrsar. On these tours, you can admire the steep cliffs that rise up to 150 meters high on both sides of the fjord, as well as the clear, blue-green water. Many tours also include stops at local fish farms or oyster and mussel farms, where visitors can sample the fresh seafood grown in the nutrient-rich waters of the fjord.
On the north side of the fjord is a well-known cave, the Pirate’s Cave, which has become a popular destination for boat trips. According to legend, the cave was once used by pirates to hide their loot. Today it serves as a small tourist attraction and offers a breathtaking view of the fjord and the surrounding area.
Lim Fjord has been used as a filming location for several movies, most notably “The Vikings” (1958) starring Kirk Douglas. The dramatic landscape of the fjord served as the perfect backdrop for this epic adventure film. The steep cliffs of the fjord are home to numerous bird species, including falcons, kestrels and even eagles. This makes the Lim Fjord a great place for birdwatching.
