TRAVEL GUIDE BY MARU
- LABIN -

Labin is a picturesque hilltop town on the eastern coast of Istria which offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Perched 320 meters above sea level, this town overlooks the Kvarner Bay and the seaside of Rabac town, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the nearby island of Cres.

Labin, known in Roman times as Albona, has a rich and layered history. The oldest recorded mention of Labin appears on a 3rd century Roman relief stating "Res Publica Albonessium." The town’s medieval history is evident in its architecture, with structures like the Porta Sanfior, the main town gate from 1589

In the 20th century, it became a significant coal mining center in Croatia. In 1921, Labin miners, protesting against poor working conditions, initiated one of Europe's first anti-fascist uprisings, briefly declaring the "Labin Republic”. The City Museum, located in the Baroque Battiala-Lazzarini Palace, houses an impressive archaeological collection and a reconstructed coal mine that visitors can explore, giving a unique glimpse into the town's mining heritage.

One of the top-places in Labin is Fortica, a medieval fortress offering panoramic views of Rabac and the sea beyond. Art lovers should visit the Dubrova Sculpture Park, located just a few kilometers away. This park features over 70 monumental stone sculptures created during the Mediterranean Sculpture Symposium, which has been held annually since 1970.
