The heart of Grožnjan is its well preserved medieval old town, where every corner exudes history. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll notice well-preserved stone buildings, historic houses and Venetian architecture. The peaceful atmosphere of the town makes it an ideal place to explore on foot.

 

The town was first settled in Roman times, as evidenced by the architectural foundations. Grožnjan is one of the few towns in Istria that still has a strong Italian presence, as many locals speak both Croatian and Italian. The street signs are bilingual and the Italian influence can be felt in the town’s culture and cuisine.

 

Grožnjan’s transformation into a “city of artistsbegan in the 1960s, when many artists and creative people settled here. Today, the town is home to more than 30 art galleries and studios where visitors can admire and purchase various works, from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and jewelry. The city also hosts numerous art workshops and exhibitions throughout the year. Every summer, the city comes alive with classical music performances, jazz concerts and music workshops that attract young musicians from all over the world.

 

Grožnjan’s population is small, with only a few hundred year-round residents. However, the town's population grows during the summer months when artists, musicians and tourists flock to the area for festivals and events. 

 

From the town’s walls and various viewpoints, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills. On clear days, the view extends all the way to the sea. The area around Grožnjan is perfect for hiking and cycling, with trails that take you through some of the most scenic parts of Istria.
